IN THE GARDENS OF ORRAVAN

About this Painting:

Molly and Sam were alive when I began work on this painting.  It took more time than any other painting.  It began as a challenge to myself to combine two unlikely colors and somehow or other make them work.  Is it possible to make things that shouldn't work together - work?  I won't tell you how,  but I did.

The painting became a segue back to the returned use of my arm following an injury that went undiagnosed/misdiagnosed for well over a decade.  After ten plus years of unnecessary pain (which impacted me quite a bit & in many ways) - and eventually a procedure on my shoulder of my dominant arm,  I needed time to recuperate.

Building up the atrophied muscles of my arm was the least daunting challenge.  I was not only disappointed in my colleagues.  I no longer trusted them.  On top of what happened to my arm,  then what happened to Sim, . . . . I was beginning to see a pattern in those around me and began to wonder if I wasn't seeing something emblematic of Society in general.   American Society today. (Perhaps other societies as well.  Perhaps human beings.)  And I did not like it.  Was it a fact that everything about the title of my 2004 major work was true not just of a few -- but of Society in general?   When you begin to feel, to wonder, if others/many/most care only about material wealth and few care about anyone or anything unless it impacts them - that loss of faith in mankind in Society . . . . that is not a good place to be,  even if all that is true. (And of course,  it is not true of Everyone).   ONCE UPON A TIME began to touch on this developing perception a decade earlier,  but I hadn't generalized the feeling to all of Society, to all of man-kind.   I hadn't viewed it as a growing and pervasive Societal problem.

Finally,  IN THE GARDENS OF ORRAVAN,  came a realization that in spite of the evil that had been put in my path and caused me to lose hope in Society overall,  there are YES still those out there who do operate from a place of decency and integrity, compassion and thinking about the higher good.  And those are within the Gardens.  My arm (& my hope) restored,  I was finally able to finish this painting. So I guess I'd have to say that the painting for me represents hope.

ADDENDUM:

In the Gardens of Orravan,  the most unlikely of places,  I heard someone speaking.  And I watched him speak.  And I learned something new about myself.  And hearing him speak changed something in me.  Something important.  Something essential.  It was an important step in my growth and development and what I needed to move forward to the next level.  Thank you to the sage within the Gardens for unknowingly facilitating my essential growth!
