GENESIS RISING

ABOUT THIS PAINTING 

GENESIS RISING  was a ‘template’ for THEODORA AND THE HOMELAND and would have served as its Left Panel.  But GENESIS didn’t feel as if it belonged in the finished piece, so I separated it from the other panels when the remainder of THEODORA was shipped to the Metropolitan Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan.  

I then spent another six months detailing the design elements of the sky and working on the sculptural elements (as a test for another work, SAOIRSE’S GARRADH).   GENESIS RISING  stands on its own though & is a watershed moment in the evolution of ‘sculptural expressionism’ as the various elements worked without the addition of any outside substrate to keep the lavender flowers tall and support the weight of the bumblebee keeping him afloat in three-dimensions.  I used a hollow-core oil medium stent for the first time.

I hope GENESIS RISING delights children and sparks a lifetime interest in the arts for Generations to come!  If it does that, well then indeed, mission accomplished! 

Provenance: 

Remainder of this piece (Theodora and the Homeland) has been shown in Japan at the Metropolitan Art Museum in Tokyo and is currently touring China as part of a Corporate Collection.  GENESIS RISING is all that remains of this work in the USA.   All three of the panels are an homage to the beauty of unstructured,  unpredictable,  untethered freedom. It is not a cookie cutter approach,  it is not a structured approach,  it is not done in the style taught by some school or forced on me to emulate.  There is literally no plan when I start to paint.  I just go. And when I do this - when I totally let go - that is when the magic happens! 

The woman on Malibu's Westwood Beach said,  'YOU PAINT WHO YOU ARE.'  I am an American and a free person.  Here a seed of an idea of something never realized before suddenly becomes a reality.  New ideas are pollinated, nurtured and blossom.  Rebelling against and therefore not referencing or using any artistic rules or guides or known practice whatsoever,  but working entirely 'off the cuff' as it were,  completely freely,  this work is to me in a very real sense the essence of what it means to be American.

To me these paintings,  THEODORA as well as  GENESIS RISING,  are the visceral emotional tactile embodiment of what being free looks and feels like.  Freedom is a beautiful thing!
